President's Message March 2008

Hello BMECC members and fellow hikers,

Spring will be here before we know it.  There will be lots of activities from which to choose.  We have the Annual Pot Pie Dinner…Arboretum Clean-ups…Port Clinton hike…Pinnacle hike…Reading Clean-up…Adopt-A-Highway…Eagle’s Nest hike…assorted work trips…Ricketts Glen hike…Lehigh Gap hike…Stony Valley bike trip…Horseshoe Trail hike…Union Canal Tunnel hike/bike ride…Ladies Day on the Trail…This is our schedule at a glance.

Look for the full description of each event on the website or in our newsletter. Contact the leaders for details.  Tell a friend about our activities or bring one or two friends with you when you attend.

BMECC will partner with several groups and organizations this Spring.  In addition to joint hikes with other hiking clubs, we have a couple of activities of particular interest that I would like to draw to your attention.

On April 5, we will partner with Scott Russell of Ye Olde Backpacker to coordinate a major cleanup at the Port Clinton Trailhead.  West Brunswick Township will be providing trucks and folks will be volunteering from all parts of PA and neighboring states.  No experience is required.  There is no time limit for your effort.  As Dave Crosby always says, “Stay as long as you like, leave when you must.”

On May 21, we will again partner with XL Corporation for their Global Day of Giving.  This will be our third year coordinating with Mike Crossman and his folks at XL Corp.  The volunteers of XL Corp are dedicated in providing man-hours in accomplishing tasks needed in various areas of the Appalachian Trail.  We are very appreciative of their time spent on the AT section maintained by BMECC.

I encourage everyone to participate in our activities.  It is a great opportunity to network with other groups and clubs.  It is a fun way to spend a day, meet new people and accomplish much needed tasks.

Remember your New Year’s Resolutions?  This quarter provides lots of opportunity to fulfill your promise.  Enjoy the Great Outdoors!

Sincerely,

Martyann Gutierrez
