January 2009 – CLUB DUES FOR 2009 ARE DUE.

Sundays, 7:30 p.m. – Keep active this winter by dancing. 
Most Sunday evenings at the Winner Circle Saloon in the Holiday Inn, Grantville for dancing 8-10 p.m.  Call leaders for details: Joan and George Shollenberger 717-933-4858.

Sunday, January 11, 1:00p.m. – Sand Spring Trail to Tom Lowe Trail. 
Nice afternoon hike, rocks, stream crossings.  Bring water, snacks, must wear sturdy boots.  Meet at Game Lands Parking Lot Shartlesville.  Leader: Martyann Gutierrez 610-777-1442 or martyann9@yahoo.com.

Sunday, January 11, 12:00p.m. – Trip to PA Farm Show. 
If you think this is not a hike, you have never been there!  Meet at C.J. Hummel’s Gathering Place along Rt. 143 in Lenhartsville.  Secondary meeting place is Bethel Library at 1:01p.m.  Pay the drivers .10 per mile.  Wheel chair service available.  Leader: Warm Hand Ron Kieffer 484-269-0852.  

Sunday, January 18, 8:30a.m. – Clarks Valley to Peter’s Mountain Shelter. 
A.T. hike with rocky sections and moderately step ascent and descent.  Moderate to difficult, 14 miles approx.  Dress appropriately for this winter hike.  Bring food and water.  Heavy snow will cancel.  Meet at Bethel Library Rt. 501 and I-78..  Leader: Cliff Weinhold 610-763-0815.

Sunday, January 25, 9:00a.m. – Village of Rock to Route 183. 
Approx. 6 miles using less traveled and known trails.  Moderate to difficult.  Can be done in light snow.  Dress appropriately for winter.  Being water and food.  Meet at State Game Parking Lot Route 183.  Leader: George Shollenberger 717-933-4858.

Sunday, February 1, 8:30 a.m. – Winter hike to Swatara Waterfalls. 
1 mile hike to ‘find’ Schuylkill County’s ‘hidden’ falls.  The falls could be frozen nearly solid.  Moderate, due to moderate to steep downhill to falls and back.  Wear winter clothes and food and water for approx. 3 hours in the winter wonderland.  Meet Bethel Library Rt. 501 and I-78.  Leader: Cliff Weinhold 610-763-0815.

Wednesday, February 4, 7:00p.m. – BMECC General Membership Meeting. 
Nominating committee will announce the new slate of officers/directors.  Due must be paid by March 1 to be able to vote in the April election.  Meet at Reinsel Kuntz Lesher Building located across from Target at 1330 Broadcasting Road, Wyomissing.  For directions call Janice Reich 610-372-1636 or Martyann Gutierrez 610-777-1442.

Sunday, February 8, 11:11a.m. – Pinnacle hike via Panther Spring. 
Four hours, easy.  $6.00 breakfast at Kempton Gun Club along Pine Road off Rt. 143.  Leave there at 12:12p.m. to start the hike.  Meet at Kempton Gun Club.  Leader: Ron Kieffer 484-269-0852.

Saturday, February 14, 10:00a.m. – Winter wonderland atop Route 501. 
Dust you’re your winter toys and join us for X-country skiing, sledding or ice skating.  Bring a sandwich and we’ll provide hot soup and drinks.  Meet at Shollenberger’s, Route 501.  Call the Leader for details: Joan and George Shollenberger 717-933-4858.

Sunday, February 15, 10:00a.m. – Easy 6 mile hike over the mountain and back starting near village of Shubert in Bethel Township.  We will use map from 1876 to follow abandoned old Mt. Road up to the Blue Mt. into Schuylkill County.  Spot old foundations, Inns, Farmsteads, Black Smithies and learn Berks County history.  Meet at Bethel Library, Route 501 and I-78.  Leader: Mike Najarian  717-933-4682.

Sunday, February 22, 11:00 a.m. – Union Canal Tow Path hike. 
Stonecliff County Park to Blue Marsh Silt Basin & return.  Easy 10 miles on level hard-packed path along the Tulpehocken Creek.  Bad weather/deep snow will cancel.  Meet at Stonecliff Parking Lot, Columbia Ave.  Leader: Dave Reitz 610-921-3303.

Wednesday, March 4, 7:00p.m. – BMECC Executive Meeting.

Sunday, March 8, 10:10a.m. – Morris Arboretum stroll near Philadelphia.
$10.00 admission fee.  Wheel chair service available.  Meet at Birdsboro IGA.  Leader: Ron Kieffer 4848-269-0852.

Saturday, March 14, 9:00p.m. – Dog Lover’s moonlight hike. 
Join leaders and their dog for a short moonlight hike atop 501, approx. 3 miles.  Dessert and socialize afterwards.  Bring flashlight.  Call ahead for directions and details to Shollenberger’s 717-933-4858.

Sunday, March 15, 12:12p.m. – Enjoy Trexler Park and music of the Allentown Symphony. 
Concert 3-5p.m. with Spanish music and guitar soloist.  Purchase tickets at the door or ahead by calling 610-432-6715.  10% discount for BMECC members.  Dinner afterwards optional. Meet at C.J. Hummel’s, Lenhartsville.  Call leader for details.  Mercedes Jurkiewicz 484-515-8001.Nolde Forest Hike. 

Sunday, March 15, 8:30a.m. – Work trip on Appalachian Trail.

Sunday, March 22, 1:00p.m. – Parks & back roads of western Berks. 
Shuttle from Robesonia to Womelsdorf, 6 miles, then walk along back roads with less traffic and around and thru parks.  Wear boots if snow and dress accordingly.  Optional restaurant stop for supper.  Meet Conrad Weiser Park located East end of Womelsdorf off Rt. 422, parking lot is near Visitor’s Center.  Leaders: Gerry and Willie Kramer 610-678-5245.

Sunday, March 29, 9:30a.m. – Mystery hike in Schuylkill County. 
Moderate to difficult hike, possibly some bushwhacking.  Approx. 6-8 miles.  Meet at Dunkin Donuts Rt. 309 and 54, Hometown. Leader: Catherine Shade 610-929-8733.

When car-pooling offer the driver $0.10 a mile.  Check with the leader to see if weather conditions will cancel the hike.
